Open enrollment has begun and will continue until March 31, 2014, for individuals, families, and small group employers (less than 50 employees) to sign up for health insurance through the health insurance exchanges mandated by the law. Key points to remember include:

  • Sign up by December 15 for coverage that will go into effect January 1, 2014.
  • Subsidies are available that will help many individuals and families afford health insurance. In addition, millions of additional people will qualify for Medicaid.
  • Insurance is important so that you and your family can access the medical care you need, when you need it, at an affordable price. And beginning January 1, 2014, you may be required to have it or pay a penalty.
  • You cannot be denied insurance or charged more money because of your medical history.
